about

"Words" is in part a love song. It's also about the changing nature of the words we exchange. When words heard travel through the mind, they bloom into countless other things.

The phrase “Passing Russell Square” comes from the essay "Craftsmanship" by Virginia Woolf, which explores a similar idea. It was my alternate title for this song.

lyrics

I said I love storms,
He said I love the sound of the rain,
I said I love you.

She said I want change,
He said I want you to believe there's sometimes good in staying,
She said I'll never go.

And the words came out,
They showed up saying not quite what they meant in the first place,
And the days kept on,
People left wondering what happened to the words they said.

He said I need a beer,
She said I need to hear some music,
He said I need you.
She said I hate films,
He said I hate when people tell me all their boring dreams,
She said I dream of you.

And the words came out,
They showed up saying not quite what they meant in the first place,
And the days kept on,
People left wondering what happened to the words they said,
The thoughts that they once had,
Floating around somewhere.

He said I found my keys,
I said I found just what I please, and that's to be with you,
He said I love you too.
