Advice From Strangers

I was standing inside a dimly lit bar,
He saw me acting for a crowd from afar,
It was "Ulysses,"
A book I've never read.
He told me that he thought I could be a star,
I told him that I'd never acted before,
But I was certain,
I'd rather sing instead.
I told him I'd never really loved before,
He told me I had to find someone that I admire,
And he was right.
Rode back from singing on a summer night,
I was on the back of his blue motorbike,
I didn't tell hiim,
I was enjoying the ride.
We ended up playing guitar in the park,
He told me it was pretty lonely to work,
As a performer,
But I still wanted to try.
I told him I'd never really loved before,
He told me I had to find someone that i admire,
And he was right.
Funny they don't know that I'm still thinking,
About the words that they passed on,
I wonder if they have a memory,
Or if I'm already gone.
When it comes to pieces of wisdom people impart,
Just remember they're kind of like a shirt,
Some of them will fit you well,
And others, well, they won't,
You gotta find the ones you like the most.
Sat on a bench in the French Garden of Flowers,
Drinking the wine that we'd been sharing for hours,
And then I told him,
Maybe I need a routine.
He said I needed to just do what I love,
No sense in wasting time and finding a job,
That will consume me,
And make me live too clean.
I told him I'd never really loved before
He told me I had to find someone that I admire
I told, he told
I said, he said,
I told, he said, I. . .
{Note: Some of the hushed whispers are excerpts from James Joyce's "Ulysses," a book I've never read.}
